A Faster, Safer, Improved Charleston Boulevard Is On The Horizon
The Alternatives Analysis Process
An Alternatives Analysis evaluates different transportation solutions for a specific corridor to determine the best option that meets community needs and project goals. The process involves several steps.
- Identify Options: The analysis begins by considering a broad range of potential transportation alternatives, such as buses, rail systems, or other innovative technologies.
- Screen Alternatives: The initial list of options is reviewed to identify those that best address the project’s purpose, goals, and community needs. Options that are not feasible or practical are set aside.
- Evaluate in Detail: The remaining alternatives are thoroughly analyzed using criteria like cost, travel efficiency, environmental impacts, and benefits to the community. This includes studying how each option might improve safety, mobility, and economic development in the area.
- Engage the Community: Throughout the process, community members, local businesses, and representative organizations are consulted to ensure the process and findings reflect local priorities and concerns.
- Recommend the Best Fit: Based on the analysis and community feedback, a “locally-preferred alternative” is selected. This is the option that best balances cost, benefits, and feasibility.
- Prepare for Next Steps: The selected alternative is refined, and plans are developed to move forward into detailed design, funding applications, and environmental review.
